We very much look forward to seeing you in November.
Research on social and economic costs of obesity in West Yorkshire, Humber and North Yorkshire
West Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership and the Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership have launched a joint tender seeking research proposals to examine the social and economic costs of obesity in their regions.
This collaborative project is set to uncover the far-reaching impacts of obesity on healthcare, productivity, social inclusion, and mental health. The research will also explore how trauma and obesity intersect, using a trauma-informed approach to understand the psychological and emotional impacts.
Obesity is a complex public health issue in the region. According to Office for Health Improvement & Disparities (OHID) 2020/21 figures 66.5% of adults in Yorkshire and the Humber were classified as either overweight or obese, higher than the England average of 63.5%. The region has remained above the national average since 2015/16. Within the area, the rates vary significantly - North Yorkshire reports 61.4% of adults as overweight or obese, while Wakefield sees a high of 71.6%.
The project aims to provide evidence-based insights and recommendations to address these challenges and contribute to future care models. This research will be informed by a trauma-informed approach, acknowledging the potential psychological and emotional factors contributing to and resulting from obesity.
See the commissioning brief for the details. Submit your proposal by Tuesday, 12 November 2024 to Lisa Buchanan lisa.buchanan11@nhs.net, Senior Project Manager (Prevention).
The decision as to which agency or partner has been successful in their application will be on Tuesday, 19 November. After an initial meeting on Tuesday, 26 November, with work expected to start on Tuesday, 3 December.
West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) are developing a Work, Health and Skills Plan to improve the work, health, and skills offer to residents and ensure everyone has the support to lead a healthy life, access to good employment, and the skills needed to thrive.
They have commissioned Kada Research to co-design engagements and develop the plan.
They are looking to speak with 30 people aged between 16-64 from across West Yorkshire who due to their health and/or disability are unable work, but would like to. This will involve having a chat for about an hour either over the phone or in-person (wherever they feel most comfortable) about their experiences, challenges, the support they need or have used, and their hopes for the future.
People taking part will receive a £30 one for all voucher as a ‘thank you’ for taking part with the opportunity to stay involved (this will not affect people’s benefits).
If you are interested in getting involved, please contact George on info@westyorkshirehealthwatch.co.uk or 0113 898 0035 / 07496 403 341.

Does your organisation work in South Kirkby and/or Moorthorpe?
You've got until Sunday to apply for a Building Healthy and Sustainable Communities
We've just opened another round of Building Healthy and Sustainable Communities funding that would be right up your street:
- ✅ Can fund core and project costs, like staff time & venue hire
- ✅ Quick and easy application form
- ✅ You and your fellow VCSE applicants decide what to fund
- ✅ £500 to £5,000 grant (£10,000 for joint applications)
Applications are welcome from VCSE organisations from across Wakefield District, you’ll just need to demonstrate existing ties to the delivery area ⬇️
Upcoming Deadline: Alec Dickson Trust
The Alec Dickson Trust supports volunteering or community service projects in the UK that are organised and run by young people aged 30 and younger.
Grants of up to £500 are available to individuals or small groups of young people in the UK to help them put their ideas into action and run projects that benefit the lives of others.
The funding is for UK-based projects that:
- Support and encourage youth volunteering, particularly those that involve lots of volunteers, and encourage young people to stay engaged as volunteers in the long term.
- Have a positive impact on disadvantaged communities and individuals. Projects should identify a specific need and how to address this need. There is particular interest in projects that will have a deep and meaningful effect on those it reaches, as well as projects that are as long-lasting and sustainable as possible.
- Are innovative and try to do things differently. This could be addressing a real need for the community or doing something that has not been done before.
Applicants will need to provide a referee who know them in in a professional capacity, but who is not part of the volunteer project.
Applications are reviewed every quarter, in January, April, July, and October.
The deadline for applications is 13 November 2024.
Small Charities Can Apply Soon for Core Funding to Support Young People, Disadvantaged Families, Prisoners
The Woodward Charitable Trust, a grant-making trust, is one of the Sainsbury Family Charitable Trusts. Twice a year it awards grants to UK registered charities with an annual turnover of less than £200,000 who are making ‘a real difference in their communities and who stand out in the work that they do’.
The funding is for charitable organisations in the UK working in the following areas:
- Children and young people (up to 25 years) who are isolated, at risk of exclusion or involved in antisocial behaviour. This covers gang violence and knife crime, education and mentoring, as well as projects that work to raise self-esteem and employment opportunities and encourage an active involvement in and contribution towards the local community.
- Disadvantaged families. This covers parenting support and guidance, mental health, food poverty, refuges and domestic violence projects.
- Prisoners and ex-offenders and specifically projects that maintain and develop contact with prisoners' families and help with the rehabilitation and resettlement of prisoners and/or ex-offenders after their release.
The majority of an applicant's beneficiaries (more than 50%) must be within at least one of these areas to be eligible.
Although grants of up to £3,000 are available, most grants are for £1,000 or less. The Trustees favour small-scale, locally based initiatives and most grants are only for one year.
The grants are for core costs rather than specific projects and will cover staff salaries, rent, utilities, general office costs, accountancy/audit costs, fundraising, governance and compliance, and costs supporting the core programmes of the organisation.
Applications will be considered from UK registered charities, charitable incorporated organisations (CIOs), community interest companies (CICs) and exempt charities with an annual turnover of less than £200,000.
Organisations may apply for a grant for up to three years in a row, or three times within a five-year period. Once this has been reached they must wait two years before reapplying.
There are two application windows each year with applications usually considered in March and November.
The next round will open for applications on 4 November 2024 and close on 13 December 2024 (noon).

Youth Endowment Fund Launches Open Call Funding Round
The Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) invites proposals from delivery organisations across England and/or Wales that work to reduce young people’s involvement in violence and are ready for rigorous evaluation.
The aim of this open call is to fund and evaluate projects that will help YEF build strong evidence for practices and approaches in areas where clear gaps exist.
The funding is for projects which are ready for an impact evaluation with an experimental design (ie, randomised control trial) or a quasi-experimental design.
The funding can be for both the delivery of the intervention and the evaluation itself.
Projects need to primarily support children and young people (aged 10 to 18 years) who are either:
- At risk of crime or violence (‘secondary prevention’), or
- Already affected by violence, offending or exploitation (‘tertiary prevention’).
Projects also need to be working in one of the following sectors:
- Youth sector
- Children’s services
- Youth Justice
- Policing
- Neighbourhoods
- Health
- Education
YEF is interested in proposals from both:
- Delivery organisations currently delivering an evaluable project, service or intervention.
- Partnerships between delivery organisations and YEF Evaluator panel members.
Applications will be considered from registered charities, companies, statutory bodies and community interest companies (CICs) supporting children and young people in England and/or Wales.
There is no set grant limit. Applicants need to provide 20% of delivery costs themselves either through supplementary funding or in-kind provision. Organisations led by representatives of Black and/or racially minoritised communities who are unable to meet the 20% supplementary and in-kind target should apply as their application will be assessed separately.
There are no deadlines for this open call.
