Funding
Funding for places of worship
Tom Tugendhat, Security Minister has announced that places of worship will receive £28 million in funding to help keep them and their attendees safe.
The funding is available this year through two schemes:
- Places of Worship Protective Security Funding Scheme
- Protective Security for Mosques Scheme
The funding is part of the government’s commitment to ensure that faith communities in England and Wales are protected from the threat of hate crime and terror attacks, and can practise their faith freely and without fear. The money is for physical protective security, such as CCTV, intruder alarms and secure fencing to help protect mosques, churches, temples, gurdwaras and other places of worship. Mosques will also be able to access a new security guarding scheme later in the year.
To apply for funding, applicants should submit evidence of their vulnerability and experience of hate crime.
The application process is open from 21 June 2023 until 15 August 2023 at: https://www.homeofficesurveys.homeoffice.gov.uk/s/powapply23/
Muslim places of worship and their associated faith community centres will be allocated to the Protective Security for Mosques Scheme. All other faiths, except the Jewish community, will be allocated to the Places of Worship Protective Security Funding Scheme. A separate funding scheme is available to provide security measures for the Jewish community.

From Harm to Hope: Achieving a generational shift
in demand for drugs in Wakefield
The national drug strategy, From Harm to Hope, sets out the government’s long-term ambition to reduce overall drug use towards a 30-year low. The strategy acknowledges the Independent Review of Drugs led by Dame Carol Black which identifies:
- Heroin and crack cocaine market has been overtaken by the countylines model, driving increased violence in the drugs market and the exploitation of young people and vulnerable drug users.
- Young people and children have been pulled into drugs supply on an alarming scale, especially at the most violent end of the market.
- There are strong associations between young people being drawn into county lines and increases in child poverty, the numbers of children in care and school exclusions. Social media has played a facilitating role.
- Increased use of powder cocaine has been driven by those under 30. The demand for these drugs is strongly linked to the night-time economy and alcohol.
- There is a considerable increase in children using drugs, after a long period of a downward trend.
- Disinvestment in drug treatment and a growing level of unmet need.
More details coming up soon.

Jobs

We are hiring two new Community Panel Coordinators
We are excited to share that we are hiring two new Community Panel Coordinators.
One will bring together six parent and carer community panels across Wakefield District, one in each Family Hub cluster area, making sure each panel serves the needs of local parents and carers.
The other will bring together a pool of volunteers from across Wakefield and the surrounding district to form a new community panel of people who have experience using local mental health support services.
Over the last few years, our panels and partnerships have gone from strength to strength, engaging and involving local people who are using services and connecting them to decision-makers. If you want to make a difference and are experienced and enthusiastic, take a look at these fantastic opportunities.
If you have any questions about the process, or you would like to have an informal discussion about the post, please contact our Chief Executive Officer, Gary Jevon, by telephone at 01924 787379.
